Course of Study

The Auxiliary Nurse and Midwives (ANM) program is structured over two years, including a six-month internship, to provide a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

Detailed Subject Breakdown

Explore the learning objectives and content for each core subject in the ANM curriculum.

1. Community Health Nursing Introduces the concepts of community health, primary healthcare, and the role of health teams. Students learn to conduct home visits, assess community health needs, and communicate effectively.
2. Health Promotion Focuses on nutrition, hygiene, and mental health. This includes planning balanced diets, understanding the human body, promoting environmental sanitation, and identifying mental health needs.
3. Primary Health Care Nursing Covers the prevention and restoration of health. Key topics include infection control, immunization, management of common communicable diseases, and first aid for emergencies.
4. Child Health Nursing Focuses on the assessment of growth and development in children, their nutritional needs, care during common illnesses, school health programs, and the rights of children.
5. Midwifery Covers the human reproductive system, normal pregnancy, labor, and postnatal care. Students learn to conduct normal deliveries and identify high-risk pregnancies.
6. Health Center Management Prepares students to organize and manage a sub-center, maintain stock and supplies, implement national health programs, and coordinate with other health team members.

Clinical Experience

Practical experience is a cornerstone of the ANM program, ensuring students are competent and confident in real-world healthcare settings.

Community Health Nursing & Promotion

Expected Competency Hospital Experience Community Experience
Community assessment and home visiting. Health assessment of persons. Village mapping, assessing health concepts of families.
Perform nutritional assessment. Assess patients with malnutrition. Group work on nutrition exhibition and demonstrations.
Assess environmental sanitation. - Assess community sanitation, disinfect well, prepare reports.

Child Health Nursing

Assess growth and development. Assess 10 children of different ages. Conduct school health clinic, assess growth, refer.
Care of the sick child. Give care as per IMNCI protocol. Give care for diarrhoea and ARI at home.
Counsel mothers about feeding. Counsel mothers on breastfeeding. Demonstrate complementary food preparation.

Midwifery

Expected Competency Hospital Experience Community Experience
Assessment of pregnant women. Examine 20 antenatal women. Conduct antenatal examinations at home.
Conducting normal delivery. Conduct 10 safe deliveries, plot partographs. Conduct deliveries in health centers/home.
Counsel couples on contraception. Prepare acceptors for sterilization, insert IUCDs. Distribute oral pills and condoms.

The examination process includes both internal and external assessments to ensure a thorough evaluation of the student's capabilities.

Key Guidelines & Rules

  • Passing Marks: A candidate must secure 50% in aggregate for each subject, passing in theory and practical exams separately.
  • Attendance: A minimum of 80% attendance in theory and practicals is required to be eligible for examinations. 100% attendance in practical areas is required for the award of the diploma.
  • Attempts: A maximum of 3 attempts, including the first, are permitted for each paper.
  • Promotion: A candidate failing in more than one subject will not be promoted to the next year.
  • Internship: The principal must certify the successful completion of the internship program and 100% of clinical requirements before the award of the diploma.
